Best Cottage Country Craft Beers
When it comes to beer, buyers in Ontario have tons of choices! Either you can head to the Beer Store or the LCBO and grab a popular brand name or look for some of the Best Cottage Country Craft beers that are produced locally and are just as good, if not better than the big name brands.
I grew up at a time in Ontario that if you drank beer the choices started with Molson or Labatt. My first ever beer was a Molson Export because that’s the brand that my dad drank and his stash was the easiest to sneak one from. As I became of legal age to drink (maybe a bit before that) I started to try out other beers at parties and learned quickly that I became a fan of smaller beer companies such as Moosehead, Creemore Springs, Upper Canada Brewing and Sleeman.
Today, those are big names in the beer world and helped grow the microbreweries or craft brew industry which has continued to grow in popularity based on people showing loyalty to a local company, a connection to a local bar and most importantly people appreciating the great taste that some of these smaller companies can produce.
For years I would try different beers here and there but in the last few years I have started to make a conscious effort to try out one or two new craft beers from either a new company I’ve never tried, or a new offering from a company that I have already tried and appreciated the taste.
My list of top Ontario craft beers is far from scientific but they are ones that I enjoy and most others around me have enjoyed and if you are going to look for a beer to bring up to someone’s cottage as a guest or looking to try out a new microbrew then this list should give you a bit of a head start.
Muskoka Brewery
Muskoka Brewery has only been around since 1996 but they’ve grown to become one of the biggest Ontario craft beer brewers and one of the popular choices for visitors to cottage country. Opening at a time where microbreweries didn’t really exist, Muskoka Brewery became a staple in cottage country and created a foothold in the area all the while offering up new products and creating great beer. Their product line offers up something for everyone and also includes their own line of Gins. If you can’t make it up to Muskoka in person, Muskoka Brewery can be found at The Beer Store, LCBO locations and many other retail locations. The full list can be found on their website. Definitely worth trying out even if you aren’t going to cottage country and just want to have a craft beer with friends.

Fenelon Falls Brewing Co.
I don’t make it down to Kawartha Lakes much but I had heard about Fenelon Falls beer from friends that own cottages nearby and always raved about the beer that Fenelon Falls Brewery produces. I finally was close enough that I made my way to check them out personally and was happy I did. Located in a beautiful old building I got to try out a couple of their beers and I can easily saw that my friends that bragged about Fenelon Falls beer were right. My only regret was not being able to try out more while I was there but that just means that I need to head back to Kawartha Lakes. In the meantime, if you are heading up to someone’s cottage nearby, stop in and bring some for your hosts…They will appreciate it!

Lake of Bays Brewing Co.
I had been invited to Baysville Ontario to a friend’s cottage and he had a bunch of beers from Lake of Bays in the fridge (even more empties on the back deck) which is where I got my first taste of this truly great brew. Opened in 2010 as a small little location in Baysville they have since expanded to Huntsville and Bracebridge for you to try out their beers along with a full restaurant menu and then take some home or to Algonquin Provincial Park if that’s where you are heading for a camping week. Craft beers from Lake of Bay Brewing can be found at the LCBO and the Beer Store depending on the location and if you see them on the shelf, do yourself a favour and pick a couple up to try out.

Sawdust City Brewing Company
Opening in 2014 in Gravenhurst Ontario Sawdust City came out hot winning the Golden Taps award of the Brewmaster’s Choice – Best Beer in Ontario for their Lone Pine IPA. Not to be outdone, it won the same award in 2015! That alone made me pick some up at the LCBO to give it a try and for a whole summer it was my beer of choice. They have their lineup of year round beers but when you visit their location in Gravenhust you can choose seasonal selection and try out some fabulous brews that offer up something for everyone. If you are in the Gravenhurst area, check out the Tap Room on the weekends where you can hear live entertainment and you can marvel at their 24 foot live edge bar built from a 100 year old pine tree.

Trestle Brewing Company
A newer craft beer coming onto the scene in 2018 I learned of them because of word of mouth and because my cottage is near Parry Sound which is where you can find the Trestle Brewing Company. They have a 4000 sq. /f location on the waterfront in downtown Parry Sound where the Seguin river flows into the harbour. An all in one location with brewery on site, retail spot to pick up their beers and a bar and patio that offers up a spectacular view of Georgian Bay and of course the iconic CPR Trestle bridge. They have beers available at many LCBO locations but to get a full taste of what they offer you need to make a trip to Parry Sound and enjoy their other beer offerings.

Norse Brewery
If you are looking for a small microbrewery then Norse Brewery fits the bill. I only found out about it on my way up to Sault Ste Marie when I saw a bunch of trucks turn off the highway and head down a non-descript road. Having a place nearby in Parry Sound I took a drive one day to discover a brewery (like a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow). Naturally I gave it a shot and was pleasantly surprised with the Norse Red Ale. It is billed as an all-natural craft beer and if you are heading to Parry Sound, or plan on a week at Killbear or Grundy Lake Provincial Park and you like trying out new beers then get off the highway when you see the Norse Brewery sign and pick some up. There are a few LCBO locations in Ontario that carry Norse beer and they do deliver to certain locations.
